San Miguel de Allende: 1/2 day or 1 day
Founded in 1542, San Miguel is one of the most beautiful towns in colonial México. Located on the richest silver route in the world, wealthy hacienda owners built their splendid colonial homes there. See the Allende house, Canal house, Bellas Artes, the Parish Church and the natural springs where people still wash their clothes. Then a short ride to Atotonilco to see the painted frescoes more than any other church in the world. Built for penitents, this religious tradition continues today with people coming from all over Mexico.Guanajuato: 8 hours
Enjoy the most European city in México where one-third of the world's silver was once mined. Visit the ex-hacienda San Gabriel de Barrera. Drive up the hill to "el Pipila" for a view of the city and through the tunnels which will take us to the Juarez Theater, the third nicest theater in Mexico. See the house and museum where Diego Rivera was born. Lunch up the hill at La Casa del Conde de la Valenciana. Visit the mine La Valenciana and the San Cayetano church with its carved altars.Querétaro: 8 hrs
The city capital of the state of Querétaro is a wonderful colonial city and full of history. See one of the longest aqueducts in Mexico with seventy four arches built in 1735 by a Marquise, then visit one of the most impressive monasteries in all of America where the Franciscans founded the first apostolic college for the propagation of the faith. We will visit the church Santa Rosa de Viterbo with its fine baroque altars, the Regional Museum with a great collection from all over the state, lunch at a nice restaurant. And finally see El Cerro de la Campana where Maximilian was executed in 1867.Dolores Hidalgo: 7 hours
Famous all over México for the talavera style pottery, see the artisans painting and creating beautiful pots. We will stop at a furniture workshop where you can see how they carved the colonial style furniture. Dolores is known because it was there where the War for Independence from Spain began in 1810.Pozos: 8 hours
Take a peek into the abandoned mines and haciendas of this ghost mining town in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Walk through the ruins of ornate mansions, haciendas and mines. If you are brave, enter one of the mines with your guide. After lunch at the only hotel in Pozos, we will see the craftsmen making Pre-Hispanic instruments. Bring walking shoes and camera.Tula: 10 hours
The legendary capital of the Toltecs is a famous for the huge Atlantean stone figures. Walk through the burn palace and see the fantastic reliefs of the warriors, and a few steps away reliefs of eagles eating bleeding hearts, coyotes, jaguars and snakes. See also the museum on the site.Teotihuacan: 12 hours
This is one of the most impressive archaelogical sites in Mexico. The Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon are the biggest with over two hundred steps. See the marvelous stone figures of snakes which represent Quetzacoatl (the feathered serpent).Zacatecas: Overnight
This is perhaps the most beautiful city in Mexico, with its museum of Pedro Coronel and impressive art collection. See the Rafael Coronel Museum with over 3,000 masks on display, and the Convent of Guadalupe and its 18th century paintings and the Cathedral. The Mine El Eden. Ride over the city by cable car.Morelia and Patzcuaro: Overnight
Visit the Cathedral, the Convent of San Francisco and the crafts market. Then a short drive to Patzcuaro where we'll take a boat to the island of Janitzio. In the evening we will see the dance of the "Viejitos". Visit the Cathedral, and the market. On the way back, we'll stop in Tzintzuntzan to see some pyramids.The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary: Overnight
After a journey of more than 4,000 km. from Canada, the monarch butterflies arrive in the 10,000 high mountains in the State of Michoacan. They stay 4 months in this high altitude until they become sexually active. The butterflies then go back to Canada to die, but not before they have laid their eggs.Sierra Gorda Missions and Xilitla: Overnight
Fray Junipero Serra founded five beautiful missions in the heart of the Sierra Madre. See the mansion of Edward James, an Englishman who built a series surrealistic constructions in the jungle of Xilitla.
